The Final Post?

A large project in another field has come my way and I’ve agreed to tackle it.  So this may be the last post to this blog/website.  I will also be discontinuing the Saturday Outlook, the weekly email newsletter.  I will continue to contribute to the Handicapper’s Report newsletter, though.

If you’d like to see what I’m doing now, visit my new website about Land Banking.

As a parting gift, here are some good price horses entered for Wednesday -

Race 4  SUGAR SPIKE (8-1) – Earned a strong rating for the class while going wire-to-wire in her last.  The second and third-place finishers have already come back to win.  I know there is speed drawn outside her, but I think she’s quicker than the foes she faces today.  I like her at 4-1 or higher. (Ran 2nd at 13-1 after leading most of the way)

Race 6  HUGHESY (5-1) – Looked very good breaking his maiden in January, then was off until the end of May.  Didn’t do a lot of running that day, but may have needed it.  He figures to be fitter today and Flores (who rode him in the maiden-breaker) returns in the saddle for his good trainer.  I like him at 4-1 or higher. (Ran 4th at 7-2, was blocked in the stretch and may have been best)

Race 8  DR. CHEN (12-1) – He’ll have to beat a solid favorite in Pious David (2-1), but might be up to the task.  He comes back quickly after dueling on the lead from the inside on a day the track favored the outside lanes.  Instead of being inside the other speed horses, he’s now drawn on the far outside and gets P. Val in the saddle.  He still needs a scratch to get in the race but, if he does, I’d like him at 5-1 or higher. (Was scratched)

That’s all folks!

Michael

Wednesday At Del Mar Racetrack

Just want to pass on a couple of notes and offer some analysis of today’s races.  One, Pat Valenzuela is scheduled to return to California racing in race six at Del Mar today.  However, with Tyler Baze injured and out for at least three weeks, don’t be surprised if P. Val picks up some extra mounts.

Two, Santa Anita began rehabbing it’s synthetic course on Sunday, focusing on drainage in the stretch area, especially near the finish line.  It’s now unlikely they will change the synthetic material.  They will just try to make it all work better.  We hope they’re successful.

The fields for today’s races are a bit shorter than opening week.  Since the track has presumably been power harrowed during the last day or two, we should all pay close attention to the times and successful running styles during the early races today.

Now, let’s start handicapping today’s races.  Race one may give us an early clue, with an expected heavy favorite (Cathy’s Crunches, even money) breaking from the outside post in a small field of five after the late scratch of the two horse.  She may engage the one horse (Alaska Miss, 3-1) early or she may press or stalk.  Use this race to go to school.

Race two is on grass, so it’s not going to help us identify biases on the main track.  There are six entrants remaining after the late scratch of the seven horse.  The pacesetter may be the 5, The Unusual One (10-1), returning from a long layoff.  There’s not much value here, so I plan to watch this one also.

Race three kicks off the Pick 6 with another six horse field, headed by the expected heavy favorite, Capital Account (4-5).  He earned a huge rating in his debut and was flattered when the second-place finisher came back to win next time out.  He’s probably a free bingo square for your Pick 6, but that’s about it.

Race four has seven horses entered to go a mile.  The favorite is Luv Dragon (5-2), who is double-jumped off the claim by Miller, a positive sign.  He earned the best rating for his last race, but he did it while pressing the pace, which may not be the right style for this track.  The one horse, Ministers Power (7-2), may try to wire the field from the rail.  I’ll probably sit this out also.

Race five is the start of the Pick 4, which I would like to play.  Based on the early results, I’ll make my choices from among these contenders – Mytigerisnosissy (5-2), Rathman (6-1), Minister Machine (20-1), Swongs (12-1), and Mister Jazz (7-2).  I left out the 2, Pride of Wilshire (3-1), because she’s gone downhill after being claimed and is dropped off a short freshening, not to mention being a speed horse drawn inside other speed horses.

Race six is very interesting, with three strong contenders.  The 2, Word Association (2-1), had a troubled trip as the favorite last time and the winner of that race has already come back to win again.  The 4, Ascot’s Highflyer (4-1), overcame a slow start to win her debut while earning a strong rating, and was flattered when the third-place finisher won next time out.  Movie Duty (5-2), the 9, has the outside post and should be able to stalk the other speed types.  The ratings she earned in her last two races would probably be good enough to win this today.  I will use all three on my Pick 4 and look for an overlay for a win bet.

Race seven is now a seven horse field on grass, but it’s a competitive one.  There is a little speed (the 2, Aggie Engineer at 8-1 and the 7, Red Door Drive at 6-1) and there are a couple sharp stalker/closers (the 6, Gallant Son at 2-1 and the 8, Riviera Cocktail at 3-1).  The 9, Ferneley (7-2) would be a contender if he were sharp, but he returns from a layoff and needed this race last year.

Race eight is extremely wide-open until we’ve seen how the track plays.  My contenders include the 1 – Tahoe Yodeler (5-1), 4 – Swiss Hero (6-1), 5 – Call Me Later (6-1), 6 – Bold Fresh (8-1), 10 – Warrens Heartthrob (12-1), 12 – Swiss Tart (7-2), and 13 – Offlee Wild Boys (6-1).

Those are my thoughts at the start of the day.  Go make some money!

Del Mar Races – Handicapping For Profit

Here are some notes from the first couple days of racing -

The Opening Day crowd was a whopper on Wednesday (45,000+, a new track record) and I hate to be a party-pooper, but the per capita betting was a pitiful $84!  The previous Saturday at Hollywood Park, a small crowd of 5,000 bet over $248 per person.  It seems to me that if they’re not betting, then they’re just making the place a lot more crowded and unpleasant.

Training was cancelled on the main track at Del Mar on Thursday morning.  The “power harrowing” had caused a separation of the materials that compose the Polytrack surface.  Power harrowing, which has been done nightly since the track opened for works in July, will now be done weekly.  The surface was “remixed” and racing was conducted normally on Thursday.  But speed horses did much better in the races on Thursday than on Opening Day.  Keep your eye on the races Friday to see if the pace profile has changed.

Pat Valenzuela, one of the most talented but troubled jockeys in the history of the sport, has been given a license to ride in California.  He has a new agent and is preparing to ride at Del Mar.  Personally, I miss his style of riding and wish him the best.  It will be interesting to see how quickly he makes an impact.

Remember, my free picks for tomorrow, Saturday, will be sent out in the email newsletter Saturday morning.  To receive them, just sign up to the right and confirm your email address.  Two weeks ago, we kicked off the free picks nicely.  Last Saturday, we slumped.  I expect better tomorrow.

I got a request to pass this on to you.  If this is your kind of thing, you can check it out -

Boylesports - The Boylesports free bet now offers newly registered customers a great £20 free bet when they register and create an account with them.

Del Mar Opens Tomorrow!

Just a quick post about the opening of Del Mar tomorrow.  There are two items to note.  One, the minimum bet for the late Pick 4 has been reduced to 50 cents from $1.  Second, Del Mar has a new guy in charge of the racing surface.

On page four of the Wednesday edition of the “Daily Racing Form“, Jay Privman writes about Richard Tedesco.  From his comments, I expect the track to get more water this season and to be more consistent with the surface in the morning.  In previous years with the Polytrack surface, the surface was quick in the morning and much slower in the afternoon, leaving a lot of people, including many bettors, unhappy.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Handicapping Maiden Races For Profit

One of my favorite angles is maiden races involving second-time starters that worked well before their debut but didn’t win.  Sometimes they got bet for the debut and sometimes they didn’t, but they usually have good trainers – Baffert, Sadler, Canani, Mitchell, and others.  You’ll be surprised how often they pay a good price.

Here are a few examples from the last couple of weeks -

7/9 race 8 – Really Elegant – had a Grade B- work for her debut, ran second.  The rating she earned that day was better than anyone else’s last-race rating in the second race field.  Was overlaid from 6-1 ML up to 11-1 and paid $25.80.

6/27 race 9 – Arte Viva – had a Grade B workout from HR before her debut.  Came back at 4-1 to win second time out ($10.60)

6/19 race 3 – Bodark – Debuted at 72-1 but had a troubled trip.  Showed enough that I recommended him for the Handicapper’s Report Horses To Watch List.  Won second time out and paid $15.60.

That’s just a few examples but it’s now almost midnight on Friday night and I’m losing my focus.  There are a couple examples running on Saturday at Hollywood Park -

Race 2 – Brazzle Dazzle – Earned a B workout comment before the debut.  Is 8-1 today.

Race 5 – Loro – Earned a couple Grade B’s before the debut.  Is 8-1 for today.

Good luck on Saturday!
