Here is how I would play the Pick 5 at Santa Anita today -
Race 1 All (8 entrants)
Race 2 All (6 entrants)
Race 3 1 – Private Bounty; 4 – Mandated Bliss; 5 – Imperial Pride
Race 4 1- The Factor
Race 5 3 – Rock This Way; 5 – Gothic Peak; 8 – El Mirage King; 12 – Rauschenberg
This would be 8 x 6 x 3 x 1 x 4 = 576 tickets at 50 cents each = $288
Analysis – Race one seems wide open, with all of the entrants having good trainer stats to support them. In race two, California Soldier has a chance to steal the race from the rail but, if he can’t carry the lead all the way, everybody else has been earning similar ratings. In race three, Imperial Pride earned the best rating last time but the other two entrants had troubled trips and figure to improve. The Factor has a huge class edge in race four and loves this track. Finally, race five has 12 entrants and looks to have an honest pace. In a tough race (you can’t buy them all!), I’m using two sprinters that figure to improve with more ground to work with, a longshot that broke his maiden over the course in a highly-rated race, and a first time gelding that exits the best race.
