Michael Goodman on Horse Racing and Handicapping

Many of you know that I started in horse racing in 1978. In 1979, I became a subscriber to the Handicapper’s Report publication, which elevated my handicapping to a much higher level. In 1992, in the fallout from the S&L Crisis that caused real estate values to crash (a lot like the last few years), I went to work for Team Valor Racing Stable when they were located in Pasadena, selling shares in the horses they syndicated.

I was plucked from Team Valor at the end of 1993 to become the Customer Service Director of Handicapper’s Report during the years it was owned by Jeff Siegel. Over the next four years, I took over more and more of the publication and added some services, which included a paid selection service. After a year of showing a flat-bet profit with my selections, Jeff’s partner in National Turf (Bob Selvin) asked him to shut down my selection service because it might be taking business from that venture. Jeff agreed and shut me down.

In December of 1997, I became the owner and Publisher of Handicapper’s Report and re-instated my selection service, which showed a flat-bet profit again. The best day I had was a Friday night at Hollywood Park in May of 1998 when I released two horses. The first won the 7th race and paid over $40 and the second won the ninth race and paid over $50! The Daily Double on the pair paid over $1,000 for a $2 bet. I maintained the selection service until the Fall of 2001, when 9/11 caused serious damage to the business, which I sold to the partnership that currently owns it.

In July of 1998, I got married and became the stepfather of a 9 year old boy (who just graduated from U C Santa Barbara this summer). It probably won’t surprise you to hear that my own betting was greatly reduced during the years I was married, which ended in 2008. Like a lot of people today, recent years have been hard economically. But I’ve got a plan that I hope will help us both.
